The Department's holdings contain about 2,5 million items in Lithuanian and other languages - books, monographs, periodicals and serial publications. A part of the holdings consist of collections donated by a number of cultural figures and publications, that were compiled for individual collections.

Storage Department traditionally compiles and stores newspaper collections. The main way of acquisition of current newspaper collection is the obligatory copy. Here you may find both capital and regional Lithuanian newspapers.

The holdings include newspapers in Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, Byelorussian, Yiddish languages published in XIX–XX c. All of them are available on Newspaper reading room. Prewar Lithuanian periodical items digital views you may find on E-heritage database. Nowadays periodical and text publications links are placed on e-periodica database.

Department holdings are reflected in electronic and card (VU Central library, ground floor) catalogues.
