F.A.Q.

May students of other universities use VUL services?

Students of all Lithuanian universities may become VU Library readers provided they have a Lithuanian student identity card. Individuals who do not have a LSIC will have to register in VUL Lending Department and will be given a reader’s card.

May the loan term be renewed for one month once again after it had been renewed for one month already?

The loan term may be renewed for one month once again if: the book has not been ordered by another reader who had reserved it; the loan term has not ended. We advise you to renew the loan term no less than one day prior to the end of the loan term.

Is it possible to renew the loan term by not visiting the Library?

You may renew the loan term by calling the Lending Department tel. 268 71 20, or via internet (click the box „Enter your user name and password" and register yourself in the system), if the loan term of the book has not ended.

Does the library have a grace period for long overdue books without having to pay a fine?

Every year at the end of April Lithuanian libraries organize ‘National Week of Lithuanian Libraries’.  During this Week there are many activities and it has become a tradition that all Lithuanian libraries declare one of the days during that week as a grace period for overdue books.  Please be aware that the grace period, that is no fines, applies only to currently overdue books.  Previous fines must be paid.

In 2009 'National Week of Lithuanian Libraries’ is April 23 – 30, but the Vilnius University Library has not yet picked its grace period day.  It must be a surprise! So please watch this website – www.mb.vu.lt – for information about when that day will be.

Fines are levied to remind you to return long overdue reading materials that are sorely needed for courses by your colleagues, not to punish you.  Please be collegial and return borrowed materials on time.

Does the Library collect term papers, master’s papers and diploma papers?

These items are neither collected nor held at the Central Library. They are held in faculty dean’s offices, chairs and faculty libraries.

Do VU faculties libraries have separate electronic catalogues or shall we search in the general Library catalogue?

There is one general VU Library electronic catalogue including records of holdings of faculty libraries.

I would like to order several publications from libraries abroad via Interlibrary Loan. Should I contact the foreign library myself from where to loan the necessary items or is it performed by the staff of your Library?

If you want to order books from other library you need not do it yourself. Please contact our librarians. Postal expenses are paid by the reader.

For ordering and information contact:
Telephone (8 5) 2 68 7147
Fax (8 5) 2 68 7104
E-mail joana.bartkeviciene@mb.vu.lt, aiste.lukoseviciute@mb.vu.lt

May I order books via internet if I do not have a Lithuanian student identity card, only a reader’s card issued by the Library Lending Department?

Yes, you may.

Where can I relax or have snacks?

There is Lounge room near Philosophy reading room where you can use microwave oven, kettle, and dishes.
There are three cafes in the territory of the University: in the Grand courtyard, ground floor of Aula Parva building, in the Faculty of History in M. Daukša courtyard building (also a canteen) and Faculty of  Philology (entrance from Adam Mickiewicz courtyard or from  Pilies street) café „Aula“.
You can relax at the end of the Lithuanian corridor in the Communication area. You may also to sit down and relax next to the Professors reading room and in the Humanistic information center Emerald green reading room.
