Registration, user's card

Who can become registered users of the Library:

  • Current members of Vilnius University: students and employees;
  • Student of the other institutions of higher education;
  • foreign students, visiting professors or researchers, those coming to the University with exchange programmes and the like;
  • members of the Public.

If you are currently attached to Vilnius University, your student's or employee's card serves as your library card. You don't have to register. Citizens of Vilnius can receive a regular reader's card. Provisory reader's card is assigned to the residents of the other parts of Lithuania and to the foreign citizens. Cards are issued in VU Central library Lending Department.

Non-members of Vilnius University can be admitted after registration in the Central library Lending Department where they should present ID card or student's card. Please note that users wishing to access the University Library must be aged 17 years or over. All library users' cards are issued free of charge.

Library users' obligations

Upon entering the library you have to show your user's card to the staff member at the Information desk. You should leave your outdoor clothing and any large bags in the lockers or cloakroom. You can carry your personal items in clear plastic bag. If security gate alarm sounds as you are exiting, you will be called back by a member of our staff, who will need to check your personal items. Please, follow the approved regulations (only in Lithuanian) of VU library.

How to make a request for publication?

Publications in VU Central library stacks:

  • Publications are to be requested only using electronic catalogue

    Not all publications stored in VU library stacks have their entries in the electronic catalogue.

    Publications only to be found in the card catalogue, at VU Central library Lending Department:

    • Publications printed before 1993
    • Periodicals printed before 1995 (journals, serial editions, newspapers)
  • You can make your request using electronic catalogue only for publications stored in the stacks of Central library;
  • Publications will be fetched to the reading room you have indicated in your call slip;
  • VU students and employees receive information on completion of their request (if publication has already arrived) to VU email post box.

Publications in the open stacks of Central library reading rooms:

  • If you find a location note in the library electronic catalogue saying, that publication is in the open stacks of Philosophy or Philology Reading Rooms, you should write a call number of a publication and consult librarians in these reading rooms.

Publications in the libraries of faculties or centres:

  • If you find a location note in the library electronic catalogue saying, that publication is in the library of History faculty, you should write a call number of a publication and consult librarians of the faculty library.

Borrowing of publications

Publications can be borrowed: Publications cannot be borrowed if:
  • by students and academic staff of Vilnius University;
  • by users with cards beginning with letter K.;
  • your user's card is provisory and begins with letter L.
  • you aren't a student of Vilnius University.
  • their status in electronic catalogue is “Eilės tvarka”;
  • with call numbers starting with letters C, D, E;
  • fiction.
  • Periodicals and serial publications;
  • Publications printed before 1945;
  • Unique and high demand publications;
  • Encyclopaedias, manuals, dictionaries;
  • Items received through interlibrary loans;
  • Documents from the special collections' departments: Manuscripts, Old and Rare Books, Graphic Arts).

Not for the loan publications can be read in reading rooms of VU Central library and in libraries of faculties and centres. Fines (fixed by the University) are charged on overdue items. Fines can be paid only in cash in VU Central library Lending Department.

Borrowing and returning of publications

Open stacks in reading rooms of VU Central library:

  • Publication shelved in the open stacks of reading rooms are indicated in the library electronic catalogue;
  • You can go straight to the open stacks, pick the publication you need and read it;
  • Bring the publications back to the reading room you borrowed them from.

Publications in the closed stacks of VU Central library:

  • You can make a request for a publication by the electronic catalogue or by filling in a call slip (a call slip should be filled if record of publication was found in the card catalogue located in the Lending Department);
  • Publications you have requested for will be delivered to the Lending Department.
  • Publications borrowed from the closed stacks should be returned to the Lending Department.

If you requested a publication from the closed stacks to a reading room:

  • Publications will be delivered to the reading room you have indicated in your request.
  • Bring publications back to the reading room you took them from.

Publications hold in the faculties' and centres' libraries:

  • You will find information whether a publication you are searching for is in the library of faculty or centre by consulting the electronic catalogue;
  • Bring publications back to the faculty's or centre's library you borrowed them from.

Not all publications stored in the closed stacks of VU Central library have their entries in electronic catalogue:

  • Information on publications printed before the year 1993 should be searched in the Card Catalogue located in the Lending Department of VU Central library.
  • Information on periodical publications printed before the year 1995 (journals, serial editions, newspaper) should be searched in the Card Catalogue located in the Lending Department of VU Central library.

Loan periods and fines

Loan periods for borrowable publications are indicated on the library electronic catalogue. Loan periods of publications depend on demand and number of copies available. Loan duration may vary from overnight to one semester. Users can borrow only one copy of the same publication.

Fines are charged on overdue publications according to the legislation of the Republic of Lithuania.

  • 10 cents per day for one overdue publication;
  • 30 cents per day for short loans (if loan period is shorter than one month).

Users should check by themselves information on loan periods and fines in their electronic library account.

Renewals of loan duration

Loans can be renewed if nobody else has requested borrowed publication.

Loans can be renewed online:

  • If publication was borrowed from the closed stacks of VU Central library and its loan period is not overdue;
  • Loan period for publication borrowed from the closed stacks of VU Central library can also be renewed by phone (Lending department phone (8 5) 268 71 47 or by Skype.

Publications borrowed in the VU Central library reading rooms:

  • If publication was borrowed in the reading room, you can renew loan period only in the same reading room (in person, by e-mail, or phone);
  • Loans of the publications from reading rooms cannot be renewed online.

Publications borrowed in the libraries of faculties and centres:

  • If publication was borrowed in the library of faculty or centre, you can renew loan period only in the same library (in person, by e-mail, or phone);
  • Loans of the publications from the libraries of faculties and centres cannot be renewed online.

Computers, internet access

Each reading room of VU Central library is equipped with computers and most of them provide access to the internet. You can also use your own laptop. Library card allows you to use the computers free of charge. Usage of computers is regulated by rules (in Lithuanian).

Wireless network covers all area of VU Central library.

Photocopying, printing and scanning

Photocopies can be made in VU Central library and in the faculties' libraries.

Printing, copying and fast scanning services with self-service photocopiers are available in VU a main library.

Before using Self-service photocopiers you must buy a copying, printing and scanning services card in Lending Department.

Self-service photocopiers are located nearby these reading rooms: Professors' Reading Room, Philology Reading Room, Philosophy Reading Room

You can scan publications free of charge in the following VU Central library reading rooms:

Professors' Reading Room

Oriental Reading Room

Copies can be made only from the documents in very good condition.

In order to protect rare, unique prints and manuscripts (issued before the 19 century), restored documents, old periodical publications (printed before the 20 century), large format bound newspapers (printed before 1945) and photographs (made before 1960) from physical damage all these documents are allowed to be copied:

  • only by means of photography;
  • photographs are made within three days period;
  • form of copy delivered for users: digital image in library's or user's disk or digital image sent via e-mail.

Documents may be copied, printed or scanned free of charge or according to the price list.

Electronic information

Publications received after 1993 are registered in electronic catalogue.

Library tests and subscribes to electronic databases. They provide full texts of the articles from various publications and search for bibliographical information.
